Michael is able to engage a wide variety of students with his entertaining presentations and stories. As a reluctant reader himself, he quickly draws every student in with his hilarious reminisces about his own school days and how his world revolved around sport – and in particular, footy and cricket. Those hours spent kicking the footy around the backyard or belting a tennis ball into the side of the house have paid off; no, he didn’t make it into the Geelong football team, or the Australian cricket team, but he has authored a huge range of books. From his sporty Legends series (revamped and updated in 2018) through to his spooky and sinister thrillers, Michael has something for everyone.
Michael can present general author talk sessions – these are hugely entertaining and popular with students. His talks are best suited for Year 3 to Year 7 students. He will have every child riveted with his enormous range of intriguing, humorous and highly entertaining stories. His quizzes are hugely popular; any student who manages to answer eight of his sporty questions (it could be cricket, netball, football, basketball or soccer to name a few!) may well win a free book… always a very exciting moment for everyone. And be warned, if there’s enough space in the venue, he’ll bring out his little (very soft!) football and have kids shooting for goal… he cheerfully selects teachers/students to act as the goal posts! Michael will also refer to his website if the technology is available, to add a visual element to his presentation. His presentations are also sprinkled with great tips and hints about what makes a successful writer. Bringing along a notebook and pen to his presentation is not a bad idea for any aspiring writers. It’s also a good spot to jot down a question if one arises or nab Michael’s signature at the end of the session!
Michael also offers writing workshops for students – ideally from Year 3 to Year 8 in both school and public libraries. He has been an author in residence at a number of schools and is a highly engaging and motivating person with a passion and enthusiasm for helping fire the imaginations of students. As a teacher, Michael has enormous experience in the classroom setting and this is well evident in the way he goes about his work.
